PAUL BERTHON (1872-1909)

SARAH BERNHARDT / [LA PRINCESSE LOINTAINE]. 1901.

25¾x20 inches, 65½x50¾ cm. Bougerie, Paris.
Condition A. Paper. Matted and framed.

This is Berthon's most famous, and arguably best, decorative panel. It is a representation of the actress Sarah Bernhardt in her role as La Princesse Lointaine in which she wore a crown of jeweled flowers. "Berthon transformed this into a decorative conceit, large irises taking the place of the jeweled ones. Within an utterly idealized composition, [Berthon] characteristically lavished the greatest care on the realistic interpretation of the lace in her dress" (Arwas p. 90).

Berthon & Grasset p. 90, Gold 173.
